The Pheasant | A1 relief sculpture, limited edition of 10
The bird of the long season. The grouse belongs to the moor and the partridge to the first of September, but the pheasant is the one most of us picture when we picture a shoot – the backbone of the driven season from the first of October through to winter's end, breaking tall and bright over the guns. It's also the most colourful game bird of them all, which makes it the natural subject for this series: a bird already dressed in colour, repeated across an A1 field in a palette that speaks as much to contemporary art as it does to the season.
I keep coming back to the game birds – the grouse, the partridge, and now the pheasant – because they're the shapes of the year for anyone who lives this life. The pheasant has a swagger the partridge doesn't: a showman of a bird, all length and colour and confidence, and it rewards being seen en masse like this.
Each bird is drawn by hand, precision-cut, and painted in high-gloss saturated pigments before being raised 5mm from the mounting board in a floating relief. The unglazed presentation lets the gloss of the paint do what it should – nothing dulls the colour.
